Free Association

A creative warm-up tool for teams by mfelix.org

Free association is an exercise where participants rapidly call out words connected to whatever was just said. The goal is speed and spontaneity. Don't think, just react. For example:

It's one of the fastest ways to get a group loose, focused, and thinking together. Use it as a warm-up before meetings, brainstorms, workshops, or creative sessions.

This tool times your rounds, counts responses, and tracks progress over time so your team can see real improvement.

How to Play

One person acts as facilitator and operates the tool while everyone else focuses on the exercise.

1
Press Enter to start the GO countdown.
2
As words are called out, tap the left side of the screen or press Space to count each response.
3
When the timer ends, the attempt is recorded. Rate any additional scoring dimensions in the sidebar.

Scoring

Each team has a scoring mode that determines how attempts are scored. You can change the mode at any time by editing the team (pencil icon in the sidebar). The three modes are:

Count default

Score equals the raw number of responses. The simplest mode, great for getting started.

Count + Creativity

Adds a creativity rating that the facilitator or team assigns after each attempt. Score is the average of count and creativity.

Count (capped at 100) 0–100
Creativity 0–100
Score = average of both 0–100

If you use the 1 2 3 keys during a round, creativity is auto-estimated from your ratings. You can always adjust it afterward. Scoring mode can be changed at any time. Existing data is preserved and scores recalculate automatically.

Count + Creativity + Teamwork

The full scoring mode. Adds a teamwork dimension on top of creativity. Score is the average of all three.

Count (capped at 100) 0–100
Creativity 0–100
Teamwork 0–100
Score = average of all three 0–100

Teams & Sessions

The sidebar on the right has controls for organizing your practice across different groups and meetings.

Teams Use the dropdown at the top of the sidebar to switch between teams. Each team has its own history, so you can track multiple groups independently. Hit the + button to create a new team, or the pencil icon to rename or delete the current one.

Sessions Sessions group your attempts by meeting. Start a New session each time your team sits down to practice. All attempts within a session show up together with a trend chart so you can see improvement within a single practice. Use Clear All to wipe a team's history if you want a fresh start.

Tips

  • Speed matters more than cleverness. Don't overthink it.
  • Build on what the last person said rather than waiting for your own idea.
  • "Scratch" any round that had interruptions or false starts. It won't count toward averages.
  • Create separate teams to track different groups independently.
  • Use sessions to organize rounds by date. Start a new session each time you meet.
